A QUESTION OF PERSPECTIVE?
In cooperation with the International Documentary Film Festival iREP Lagos, Nigeria
Our view on Africa is still shaped by the colonial past. Also the cinematic picture of Africa is yet to a large extent determined from the outside. A question of resources and opportunities. Today the technological development makes it possible for more and more African filmmakers to shoot films with a small budget. Is there a new generation of filmmakers emerging, which can finally undertake the decolonisation of the view on Africa!? Will these films influence and change the Western perception of Africa?
Participants panel discussion: Gilbert Ndahayo (Filmmaker Rwanda: Beyond the Deadly Pit, Rwanda) Steffen Weber (Filmmaker Zurück in den Süden, Germany) Femi Odugbemi (Director iREP Documentary Film Festival Lagos, Nigeria) Bettina Kocher (Fernsehworkshop Entwicklungspolitik, Germany)

The cooperation partner:
The iREPRESENT Documentary Film Festival was created 4 years ago to deepen appreciation of documentary films as a tool for advancing new perspectives of Africa as well as building inter-cultural understanding. Built on the thematic framework of Africa in “self-Conversation” the festival is an intimate cocktail of film screenings, topical discussions and co-production Forums and workshops over 4-days in the month of March.
Over the course of its young life the iREP Festival has become the hotbed destination for top filmmakers, culture advocates and creative intellectuals from over 12 countries in Africa, Europe and the United States.
IREPRESENT is founded by 3 Nigerian culture figures – Femi Odugbemi, Jahman Anikulapo and Makin Soyinka, who believe that documentary films are important now more than ever to mediate identities, experiences and individual cultures in a globalised world where the uniqueness of cultures are increasingly in grave and present danger. Beyond that, documentaries are important as development tools to bring our democracies to maturity and advance debate that is vibrant. (www.irepfilmfestival.com)
