VR Pop Up Cinema

Getting closer: virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR) not only allow us to immerse ourselves in fictional worlds – they also open up new immersive approaches to documentary content. In 2024, DOK.fest München, in cooperation with XR HUB Bavaria and munich creative business week, presents three current documentary VR experiences and an AR application at Ruffinihaus. We embark on a poetic journey into the Amazon rainforest, slip into the fur of dogs, take the perspective of a father with aphasia and explore the forest ecosystem – in aesthetically and narratively diverse forms of representation.

A JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF THE AMAZON is the first chapter of a VR series about the Amazon, the Argentinian Northeast and the Andes – three regions of Latin America, connected by the stories told by Pachamama.

Together with 14-year-old Momoka, we explore the forest ecosystem and learn about its importance – without harming flora or fauna. With the help of the learning app, we look deeper than is normally possible for humans. With the X-ray vision function, for example, we look inside a tree; invisible fungal spores become visible and inaudible sound frequencies can be experienced.
