The DOK.fest 2023 homage is dedicated to Nikolaus Geyrhalter. A filmmaker whose works are as recognisable as they are obstinate. In conversation with filmmaker David Spaeth we will try to explore his work, examine the plannability of the unplannable and fathom the language of images. We will show the film PRIPYAT beforehand  afterwards, after a short break, the conversation will take place. The complete homage series can be viewed here.

PRIPYAT

Austria 1999 – Director: Nikolaus Geyrhalter – Masterclass Nikolaus Geyrhalter

Specialist clothing, dosimetric checks, military supervision: in 1999, the 30 kilometres around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and the city of Pripyat are an exclusion zone. The majority of the villages have been evacuated. In the past, everyone played sport here, now you are not meant to eat or drink or breathe in any dust – yet twelve years on people try to survive here in the highly contaminated ghost town.
