The megacity of Mumbai is seen here from the perspective of the people whose services make it possible for the affluent to live their nice, comfortable lives: rubbish collectors, newspaper deliverers, the boy from the laundry service, the cook, the cigarette seller and the security guard. They represent the countless migrants who have come to the city full of hope, only to work tirelessly on low wages with which they are barely able to afford to live in a shack in the slums on the outskirts of the city. Torn away from their families, they stay put for the sake of having a job. Nishtha Jain portrays in beautiful, understated images the despair, hard work and forbearance of these often unseen workers, on her own doorstep.
