For six years the director follows his protagonist Eshan by day and night – out stealing and in court – until he finds a “new gang”: his own family.

They have been severely traumatised by abuse and many have not seen their family for years. A film that is as upsetting as it is important.

Determinedly, she fights and is dragged brutally across Tahrir Square. This long-term observation shows what it means to stand one’s ground in a world dominated by men.

Kung Fu Football – the “Chinese dream.” In a Deng Feng Shaolin boarding school some of the 10,000 pupils learn to play football alongside the traditional martial arts – to complete exhaustion. China’s next generation captured in insightful sequences.
ELTERNSCHULE (Deutschland 2018, Jörg Adolph, Ralf Bücheler, DOK.deutsch). Faulty interactions. Desperate parents and their psychosomatically ill children receive residential treatment in a clinic. A film about the importance of setting boundaries and the understanding that when the parents are doing well, the children are too and not the reverse.

HIER UND DORT (Deutschland 2018, Bettina Renner, DOK.deutsch). Haris was born in Dresden. The teenager and his Bosnian mother both have only limited leave to remain in Germany. Rejected, Haris creates a Bosnian identity for himself – unlike his sister who is fully integrated.
INDEPENDENT BOY (Niederlande 2017, Vicent Boy Kars, DOK.panorama). Metin, a millennial with great talent and a wealth of opportunities, cannot get a grip on his life. So the director Vincent Boy Kars assumes responsibility for him for a month, making all the important decisions on Metin’s behalf. A social experiment.
ON A KNIFE EDGE (USA 2017, Jeremy Williams, DOK.guest). People tend to think that the native Americans’ resistance ended in 1890 with Wounded Knee. With his portrait of the 14-year-old Lakota George Dull Knife, Jeremy Williams shows that the battle continues to this day. They still march and protest.
OUAGA GIRLS – OUAGA GIRLS (Schweden, Burkina Faso, Frankreich, Qatar 2017, Theresa Traore Dahlberg, DOK.female). In a training centre in West African Burkina Faso young women learn how to be car mechanics. Self-assured and determined they are taking pioneering steps in a male-dominated profession.
PRIMAS (Kanada 2017, Laura Bari, Best of Fests). The childhood of the teenagers Rocío and Aldana is marked by abuse and violence. Now the two young women are trying to overcome their traumas: by speaking about them and dealing with the past through therapy. A film about survival and life going on.
THE DISTANT BARKING OF DOGS (Dänemark 2017, Simon Lereng Wilmont, DOK.international). 10-year-old Oleg lives with his beloved grandmother in eastern Ukraine close to the front line. His everyday life is dictated by war. The film vividly shows what it means to be a child in times of conflict and to have to grow up fast.
THE FAMILY – DRUZINA (Slowenien, Österreich 2017, Rok Biček, Best of Fests). Matej becomes a father. But new family life proves difficult, something that may be exacerbated by Matej’s family background: his mother and brother have disabilities; he assumed responsibility from an early age.
