She is looking for her brother who she thinks she doesn’t know. Or, in the end, is she searching for herself, for her creature, her creation, her being?
LAND OF THE FREE (Dänemark, Finnland 2017, Camilla Magid, DOK.guest). Instead of prevention and rehabilitation, the American justice system is focussed on one thing above all: punishment. Three ex-prisoners can still sense this when they return to life on the outside. Only the Monday meetings at a Christian church give them hope. A sensitive film about the tough social reality in South Central Los Angeles.
MIT STARREM BLICK AUFS GELD (Deutschland 1983, Helga Reidemeister, Retrospektive). From behind the camera comes the voice of the director: “But doesn’t it hurt?” In front of it, her sister with her eye steadfastly on the wax strip: “yes, but the payoff is so delightful that the pain is worth it.” Let’s not kid ourselves.
SILVANA – SILVANA (Schweden 2017, Mika Gustafson, Olivia Kastebring, Christina Tsiobanelis, DOK.international). A fascinating portrait of the Swedish rapper, Silvana Imam, who has taken Scandinavia by storm with her music and uncompromising lyrics and become a significant figurehead in Sweden’s feminist and anti-racist movements.
TRACING ADDAI (Deutschland 2018, Esther Niemeier, Student Award). Friends from your childhood – there are some you still know and some you can hardly remember. And then there are some whose stories you work out piece by piece. A documentary puzzle that takes us from the war in Syria to the German penal system and the life that pulsates outside.
