SCHOOL OF SEDUCTION (Denmark 2019, Alina Rudnitskaya, DOK.guest Canada). Lida, Vika und Diana, three Russian women, attend the post-feminist “School of Seduction” with the aim of marrying rich men. Their prospects of success are high. There is only one thing standing in their way: their desire for independence.
HÖHENFLÜGE – HIGHFLYERS (Germany 2019, Lena Leonhardt, DOK.deutsch). Several hundred thousand euros for a pigeon: a price many super rich in Dubai or China are willing to pay because especially in China betting on pigeon races has become a million-dollar business. HIGHFLYERS talks about winners and losers in a game ruled by the new powers of global economy.
ENTREPRENEUR – YRITTÄJÄ (Finland 2018, Virpi Suutari, DOK.panorama). The start-up dream: investors are queuing up. Demand for Pulled Oats, a meat-free alternative to pulled pork, is outstripping production capacity. Meanwhile a family firm that runs a little fun fair is fighting for survival. What makes an entrepreneur?
PUSH (Sweden 2019, Fredrik Gertten, DOK.panorama). “You’ve changed,” reads the large-scale graffiti emblazoned across many of Toronto’s apartment buildings. The madness of global gentrification seems to be never-ending but Leilani Farha, a UN Special Rapporteur, is fighting against the greed of the real estate industry.
THE CHINESE WILL COME (Serbia 2018, Tanja Brzakovic, DOK.panorama). Chinese migrants are hardly noticed in Serbia. They work in agriculture and trade, supplying the population with cheap everyday products. But a state visit by the Chinese president promises future-oriented changes.
SAKAWA (Belgium, Netherlands 2018, Ben Asamoah, Best of Fests). It is common knowledge that people can assume new identities on the internet. Yet many people are misled, for example on online dating sites. The Ghanaian protagonists in SAKAWA know how to take advantage of the widespread loneliness in the West. A film about internet scamming and global inequity.
