The film programme of DOK.fest München. At the cinema. At home.
3 to 14 May 2023 at the Munich venues
8 to 21 May 2023 @home
As always, DOK.fest München opens the view out to the world: with 130 of the best and most current international documentaries from 55 countries. Our goal is the greatest possible participation in our films, which is why we bring them to the big screen in Munich cinemas as well as to home screens throughout Germany: DOK.fest stays dual.
WO BIST DU, JOAO GILBERTO? – WHERE ARE YOU, JOAO GILBERTO? (France, Germany, Switzerland 2018, Georges Gachot, DOK.international Main Competition). “He is meant to have hated people so much that he could not stand them. He is meant to have loved them so much that he could not stand them.” That is what they said about Joao Gilberto, the elusive creator of Bossa Nova. Georges Gachot takes us on an entertaining, investigative trip to Rio to find out more.
NAMRUD (TROUBLEMAKER) (Austria 2017, Fernando Romero Forsthuber, DOK.panorama). With his provocative songs about religion, identity and occupation Jowan Safadi frequently courts controversy. But the musician is also a single parent… An engrossing musical portrait set against the backdrop of everyday Israeli-Palestinian life.
REGGAE BOYZ (France, Germany, United States 2018, Till Schauder, DOK.panorama). Jamaica has one of the highest murder rates in the world. The main bearers of hope here, alongside the athletes, are the footballers: with great euphoria they fight against the ubiquitous weapons madness.
SHUT UP AND PLAY THE PIANO (Germany, United Kingdom 2018, Philipp Jedicke, DOK.panorama). Who is Chilly Gonzales? SHUT UP AND PLAY THE PIANO investigates the pianist Jason Beck, whose alter ego is the self-proclaimed vain and cynical entertainer Chilly Gonzales. An entertaining mix of semi-fictional biography, home videos, a shrewd interview and concert footage.
MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A. (Sri Lanka, United Kingdom, United States 2018, Steve Loveridge, DOK.female). Rebel, artist, pop icon and mother: M.I.A. wears many hats. Her original music and culture clash aesthetic have brought her international success. The film compiles personal videotapes, interviews and live concert recordings and reveals an extraordinary woman with a vociferous attitude.
