SILVANA – SILVANA (Schweden 2017, Mika Gustafson, Olivia Kastebring, Christina Tsiobanelis, DOK.international). A fascinating portrait of the Swedish rapper, Silvana Imam, who has taken Scandinavia by storm with her music and uncompromising lyrics and become a significant figurehead in Sweden’s feminist and anti-racist movements.
WO BIST DU, JOAO GILBERTO? – WHERE ARE YOU, JOAO GILBERTO? (Frankreich, Schweiz, Deutschland 2018, Georges Gachot, DOK.international). “He is meant to have hated people so much that he could not stand them. He is meant to have loved them so much that he could not stand them.” That is what they said about Joao Gilberto, the elusive creator of Bossa Nova. Georges Gachot takes us on an entertaining, investigative trip to Rio to find out more.
ETHIOPIQUES – REVOLT OF THE SOUL (Polen, Deutschland 2017, Maciek Bochniak, DOK.panorama). In the 1970s a music lover opened the first record shop in Addis Ababa and a legendary record was made: funk, soul, rock ‘n’ roll and jazz mixed with Ethiopian rhythms. 17 years later the French music journalist Francis Falceto introduced western audiences to this music with his CD series Éthiopiques and pulled off a great coup.
NAMRUD (TROUBLEMAKER) (Österreich 2017, Fernando Romero Forsthuber, DOK.panorama). With his provocative songs about religion, identity and occupation Jowan Safadi frequently courts controversy. But the musician is also a single parent… An engrossing musical portrait set against the backdrop of everyday Israeli-Palestinian life.
REGGAE BOYZ (Frankreich, Deutschland, USA 2018, Till Schauder, DOK.panorama). Jamaica has one of the highest murder rates in the world. The main bearers of hope here, alongside the athletes, are the footballers: with great euphoria they fight against the ubiquitous weapons madness.
SHUT UP AND PLAY THE PIANO (Großbritannien, Deutschland 2018, Philipp Jedicke, DOK.panorama). Who is Chilly Gonzales? SHUT UP AND PLAY THE PIANO investigates the pianist Jason Beck, whose alter ego is the self-proclaimed vain and cynical entertainer Chilly Gonzales. An entertaining mix of semi-fictional biography, home videos, a shrewd interview and concert footage.
THE MAN BEHIND THE MICROPHONE (Tunesien, Großbritannien, Qatar 2017, Claire Belhassine, DOK.panorama). Who was Hedi Jouini? To the filmmaker he was simply the grandfather she visited as a child in the summer holidays. But Hedi Jouini was a superstar and heartthrob: the “Tunisian Frank Sinatra”. A fascinating reconstruction of a complex cultural and family history.
MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A. (Großbritannien, USA, Sri Lanka 2018, Steve Loveridge, DOK.female). Rebel, artist, pop icon and mother: M.I.A. wears many hats. Her original music and culture clash aesthetic have brought her international success. The film compiles personal videotapes, interviews and live concert recordings and reveals an extraordinary woman with a vociferous attitude.
