The film programme of DOK.fest München. At the cinema. At home.
3 to 14 May 2023 at the Munich venues
8 to 21 May 2023 @home
As always, DOK.fest München opens the view out to the world: with 130 of the best and most current international documentaries from 55 countries. Our goal is the greatest possible participation in our films, which is why we bring them to the big screen in Munich cinemas as well as to home screens throughout Germany: DOK.fest stays dual.
Indigenous culture and megacities, monarchy and liberalism – seven documentaries from and about Canada. The series is part of Canada's cultural programme as Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2020/21, supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, Telefilm Canada and the Government of Canada.
HALE COUNTY THIS MORNING, THIS EVENING (USA 2018, Ramell Ross). Composed of intimate and unencumbered moments of people in a community, this film is constructed in a form that allows the viewer an emotive impression of the Historic South – trumpeting the beauty of life and consequences of the social construction of race, while simultaneously existing as a testament to dreaming – despite the odds.
I AM ANOTHER YOU (USA 2017, Nanfu Wang). Freedom, non-conformity and a life on the streets of America – this is what Dylan left the shelter of his home in Utah for. From his perspective the Chinese filmmaker Nanfu Wang explores the value of personal freedom – and its constraints.
ISLAND SOLDIER (USA 2017, Nathan Fitch). ISLAND SOLDIER takes a look at the Pacific island state of Micronesia after the end of the US occupation in 1983. Still dependent today on US financial aid, Micronesia functions as a “recruiter’s paradise” for the US armed forces – for many inhabitants it offers them the only possibility to earn an income.
LAND OF THE FREE (Denmark, Finland 2017, Camilla Magid). Instead of prevention and rehabilitation, the American justice system is focussed on one thing above all: punishment. Three ex-prisoners can still sense this when they return to life on the outside. Only the Monday meetings at a Christian church give them hope. A sensitive film about the tough social reality in South Central Los Angeles.
MUSIC FROM A FRONTIER TOWN (Hörspiel) (Deutschland 2018, Michaela Melián). Munich’s Amerikahaus, established after the Second World War, was central to the USA’s re-education programme. Its declared aim was the de-nazification of the German post-war population. Its cultural activities attracted over 80,000 visitors per month.
