Schule des Sehens goes Goethe-Institut
Film education for German as a foreign and second language
DOK.fest München and the Goethe-Institut are collaborating for the first time with the Schule des Sehens – the centrepiece of the DOK.education programme.
A specially set-up online cinema room from the Schule des Sehens is being used in German as a foreign and second language lessons at selected partner schools of the Goethe-Institut, starting with Canada, Brazil, Estonia and Vietnam.
Using the film ALLES GEHÖRT ZU DIR by Mani Pham Bui and Hien Nguyen, international pupils are introduced to the experience of documentary storytelling. The aim is to enable young viewers to understand and critically analyse films, whilst also improving their language skills. The focus is on learning the language of film in order to use media competently and critically. This particularly concerns the realisation that documentary films, too, convey an artistically crafted version of reality – through the selection of protagonists, the camerawork and the editing.

Yen was born in Germany; her parents in Vietnam. Feeling different is not unusual for many Vietnamese Germans. After studying in Norway, Yen understands how hard it is to build a new life in a foreign land with another language. She is learning to contextualise her identity, her fears and, above all, her strengths.
The film was produced as part of the artistic and social film workshop Dreh’s Um, which was awarded the prestigious Dieter Baacke Prize for outstanding media education projects and methods.
Digital lessons in the classroom
Teachers run the Schule des Sehens programme in the classroom and in the password-protected online cinema. Supporting materials for teachers and worksheets for pupils, written in simple language, are provided to aid preparation and follow-up work. DOK.education also offers a training course for the participating teachers at the Goethe-Institut and two facilitated workshops for the pupils taking part in the pilot phase.
