Schule des Hörens 2026
DOK.education’s Schule des Hörens enables school classes to explore the world of film music creatively and to experience sound as a dramatic element. Through the short documentary film MARIAN UND DIE WALDRAPPE, pupils learn to consciously appreciate film music and composition, and to recognise the effect of audiovisual stylistic devices on emotions.
In the Schule des Hörens online cinema, alongside the film, there is also an interview with the filmmaker and the film composer, who takes the class behind the scenes to explore the work of composers, musicians and sound designers. In addition, there are engaging follow-up activities on the theme of the film and filmmaking in general.
Teachers have access to supplementary material for preparing for and following up on the film. The educational programme is written in simple language and is suitable for all types of schools wishing to explore music in film in greater depth.
The Schule des Hörens programme builds on the successful film analysis workshop from the Schule des Sehens, the centrepiece of DOK.education.
MARIAN UND DIE WALDRAPPE

Marian recognizes them all by their feathers and singing: the blue tit, the goldfinch, and even the bald ibis. This rare find in his home region of South Tyrol strengthens Marian's passion for birds. The 12-year-old sets out to search for traces of the already extinct wild bird and learns about an inspiring European species conservation project.

With the free online cinema of the Schule des Hörens, you can respond individually to the learning needs of your class. The modular system with three modules is suitable for use in the classroom, in distance learning, or as homework: your school class will find two video seminars in the online cinema, which include the film and an interview with the film composer. Creative tasks and various background information on filmmaking make visiting the online festival an experience. After registering, you will receive personal access to the password-protected website as well as comprehensive written accompanying material for preparation and follow-up work.

Schule des Hörens at SHORT FILM DAY!
Short films tell big stories in a concise form – condensed, creative and surprising. They highlight the creative diversity of this often-overlooked format – and also reach people who would otherwise rarely come into contact with short films. From 15 to 21 December 2026, the SHORT FILM DAY brings numerous short films to the heart of society, in community centres, cinemas and classrooms. DOK.education is also taking part with the Schule des Hörens!

The format Schule des Hörens was established in collaboration with the Franz Grothe Foundation. This foundation, which is closely associated with GEMA, was founded in 1960 by the film composer Franz Grothe in Bad Wiessee. It promotes the art of sound and manages his artistic archive.
