Symposium: Promoting diversity in young film talent

Dreh’s Um – Film workshops from migrant communities as an example of best practice

Young filmmakers during the Workshop "Dreh’s Um"

DOK.education invites those involved in cultural education in the field of film and media literacy as well as social pedagogues with a cultural focus to a symposium. In the auditorium of the Anita-Augspurg-BOS on Königsplatz, we will present the film education concept of the Berlin collective Dreh’s Um as an example of best practice.

In "Dreh's Um" media-educational film workshops, teenagers and young adults of Viet-German origin explore their migrant identity and family history. Guided and professionally accompanied in all production steps, the second or third generation migrant community creates personal short films.

One aim of the multi-award-winning project is to strengthen diverse participation at film schools and in the industry in the long term. "On the one hand, it's about making films and, on the other, about empowering yourself with your own perspective, taking the camera into your own hands and figuratively pointing it at yourself – away from the white, often stereotypical view of our community." says Dreh's Um initiator Duc Ngo Ngoc.

DOK.education presents this model proposal for promoting diverse perspectives in the emerging film industry and enables interested film teachers, social and media educators to get in touch with the initiators – with the vision of establishing similar workshops in Munich.
