Alune Wade, a Senegalese jazz musician, travels through West Africa to New Orleans encountering, reimagining and recording a new album with his band and other musicians who are masters of genres such as highlife and second line brass band music.

Tracing each step of his journey through Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, and the city of New Orleans where jazz was created, the film does more than follow the heritage of African musical and cultural traditions in the diaspora. Tukki — which means journey in Wolof — brings together voices from both sides of the Atlantic into new dialogues around jazz, touching on spirituality, culinary traditions, and the parading arts in the contemporary world.

The film weaves together interviews with scholars, musicians and cultural workers with in-studio and live performances to create a new approach to documentary cinema. The music is more than a soundtrack, creating different moods and sensations of each place and inviting new ways of seeing and hearing.
