ZHAO & YANG. DIE UNBEIRRBAREN
Deutschland 2006 – Director: Monika von Behr – Original language: Mandarin – Subtitles: English – Length: 92 min.
Zhao and Yang are long-time friends and housemates. Both sons of so-called "counter-revolutionaries", their freedoms were seriously curtailed under the communist regime. With no access to further education or proper jobs, they found their release in art, which provided them with hope in the face of oppression.
This film provides an unmissable insight into the People's Republic, as told by those who have seen it from the time of Mao to the current era of globalisation. It shows us the day-to-day culture of repression and mistrust that is often ignored in portrayals of China, particularly felt by those in the artistic community.
Founding members of the "nameless artists" group, Zhao and Yang's apartment is crammed with their work, metaphors for life under the regime. Now the only members still actively working in China, they continue to lead their non-conformist, anti-consumerist life.English/Original Title: Zhao & Yang. The Unbreakables.
