Born in Beijing and raised in Vienna, the filmmaker was always drawn to her parents' home country. The journey into the past of her relatives becomes an intimate reflection on family, identity and the culture of memory.

Raised in Vienna and Peru, Weina Zhao studied Sinology and Media Studies in Vienna. Since 2012 she has been working in the documentary film sector. WEIYENA is her first feature-length documentary film.
Judith Benedikt studied cinematography at the University of Performing Arts in Vienna. Since 2003 she has been working as a camerawoman and photographer for documentary and feature films.
