Maryam has Down syndrome and lives and learns in a different way than her 14 siblings. In her world, there are goats, dogs, snakes, and sometimes a wolf or leopard. Her father teaches her how to find valuable stones. While her siblings gradually move to the city, Maryam remains with her parents in the mountains of southern Iran. For 14 years, Gharibzadeh has chronicled the girl's coming of age. H.-M.S.
