LES TORTUES NE MEURENT PAS DE VIEILLESSE
MAR 2010 – Director: Hind Benchekroun, Sami Mermer – Co-Director: Sami Mermer – Original language: Arabic, French – Subtitles: English, French – Length: 92 min.
“No idea. I don’t know how old I am.” - In fact he’s around 80 and he’s still doing fine. We meet three old men who live in the North of Morocco. Chehma is a skilled sea fisherman, Abdesslam, a tambourine player from the countryside and Erradi, a maverick barkeeper and man about town. What these three colourful characters share is an amazing will to live. They work tirelessly, philosophize about life and tell their own stories. They are more active than many 18 year olds and possess a fascinating wisdom that comes only with age._The directors Benchekroun and Mermer take a gentle approach, affording their protagonists plenty of time and creating a dignified atmosphere. This is a truly laid-back film with beautiful images that underpin a portrait of a fading generation.
