Considered one of the greatest Italian writers of the last century, Primo Levi was a spokesperson for an entire generation of Jews. His memoirs describing his experiences in Auschwitz and his long journey home are key Holocaust texts. Now director Davide Ferrario has made this remarkable documentary, retracing Levi's return voyage. With the war still raging, Levi, with six hundred other survivors, was put on a train in January 1945 and sent eastwards away from his home, shunted from one European country to another until he finally reached Turin in October.

Ferrario decided against a classic documentary, using archive footage sparingly. Instead he retraces Levi's steps, filming as he goes, giving us an insightful and powerful picture of how post-Communist Eastern Europehas been transformed. As such, it is not just a portrait of this celebrated author, but an incisive snapshot of Europe today. Beautifully constructed and superbly shot in 35mm, Primo Levi's Journey is the perfect continuation of Levi's powerful legacy.
