JANO & SHIRO, A BROTHERS' JOURNEY

Netherlands 2020 – Director: Eefje Blankevoort, Els van Driel – Original language: Arabic, Dutch, Kurdish – Subtitles: English – Length: 35 min.

The inseparable brothers Shiro and Jano decide together to start their arduous escape from Syria to Europe. They get separated, experience bad moments and find their way back together - their mobile phone camera is always with them. Once they arrive in the Netherlands, the paradise they had hoped for looks different than expected: Shiro (15) finds support as a minor. He is allowed to learn the language, make friends and is integrated. The adult Jano (18) has to go to a reception centre for adults, where he has to wait without a task and without the possibility to work. After one and a half years, the decision of the immigration authorities finally arrives.

The film score, sometimes tense sometimes quite dreamy, makes their story exciting and adventurous. When the brothers temporarily lose each other, the screen is split; it feels like they are starring in their own video clip. A well-told story can change the way we look at the world. Ysabel Fantou
