The trainee chefs dream of cruise ships and Paris but for now their lives are all about shaping dumplings and cooking red cabbage. ICH KOCH follows a group of would-be master chefs through their training. The realities of life in the kitchen have nothing in common with the world of the TV chefs - who dominate television programmes with their stewing, refining and conversing. The trainees sweat it out for up to sixteen hours a day. There’s no time for friends, parties or long discussions. The director Bettina Timm once worked in a kitchen herself so she’s familiar with the life of pots and pan grease. She manages to bring to the screen both the sensuality of cooking and the frustrating routine
