DOK.fest goes schwere reiter

In 2026, too, six Mondays at the ‘schwere reiter’ venue will be dedicated to film. In keeping with the venue’s character, as part of this collaboration we will be screening documentaries devoted to the performing arts of dance, theatre and music.

On 16 November, two short films will be screened that explore the search for identity and the loss of identity in different ways. Walking takes centre stage – as does the experience of no longer being able to do so.

Joining us for a post-screening discussion: directors Judith Hummel and Lenia Friedrich

Admission: €9.00

ÖSTERREICH IM NIEMANDSLAND – WO KOMME ICH HER?

Austria 2023 – Director: Judith Hummel – Original language: German

The third short film in Judith Hummel’s trilogy focuses on her mother, Margret, who, during the final leg of their journey through Austria, is asked questions by her daughter Judith – questions about herself. As she walks, she reflects on her family background, her relationship with her own mother and daughter, and where she stands today – at a time when her own parents are dying and she has taken on the care of her own mother. She loves, she struggles, she gives, she laughs, she doubts, she opens up – everything that defines relationships. The film is a portrait of a relationship, a mother-daughter portrait.

SO IST DAS LEBEN UND NICHT ANDERS.

Deutschland 2024 – Director: Lenia Friedrich – Original language: German – Subtitles: English – Length: 13 min.

Frau Miko lives right next door. She is old, very old, maybe almost a hundred. Nobody can know for sure because Frau Miko forgets things. And this is what provides the impetus for the director and animator to reflect on her own aging: what happens when we lose our memories, what remains of us then? Animation films have always been a magnificent medium for exploring big philosophical questions. And thus we are gently transported on an intellectual journey by this short, masterfully composed film. Pure cinema magic. Jan Sebening
