DOK.fest is in the Here&Now: EINZELTÄTER TEIL 1: MÜNCHEN

in cooperation with MVHS

Munich – both loved and hated. A cosmopolitan city with a heart, a city of art, a city by the river, a city of contradictions. Four documentary films take us to special places in Munich and, from there, shed light on this city, which is more than just its clichés. A glimpse into the Bavarian State Opera, for instance, demonstrates how perfectly the machinery of this world-famous institution in the city centre functions. We are confronted with the fate of a homeless man and his touching search for a new home beyond his temporary stopover on a bridge over the Isar in Munich. We head to the northern part of Munich, where the Olympia shopping centre has stood as a symbol of trauma since the far-right terrorist attack in the summer of 2016, the consequences of which are still painfully felt by the families affected today. Finally, we turn to the legendary Atomic Café – a now vanished, legendary venue in Munich that wrote pop music history.

EINZELTÄTER TEIL 1: MÜNCHEN

Deutschland 2023 – Director: Julian Vogel – Original language: Albanian, German – Subtitles: German, None – Length: 90 min.

In July 2016, nine people were killed in a racist-motivated attack at the Olympia Shopping Centre in Munich. The film gives the surviving relatives a voice. In an instant, their lives came apart at the seams. Now they are campaigning for the state to classify the shooting not as a killing spree but a right-wing extremist attack. A compassionate, deeply moving chronicle. Ysabel Fantou
