There is the sound of piano music and high-heeled shoes clacking rhythmically on the ground._The sequence of steps is rehearsed; it leaves behind a trace on the PVC floor covering. Pina Bausch and her dancers are marking out the choreography of WALZER in a former cinema in Wuppertal. The film follows their rehearsals and the lengthy development process. Gestures and seemingly disconnected elements become improvisations, which become movements, which become dance-like figures, which become playful expressions. The choreographer sends her dancers on journeys of movement. The film is not only a dance film but also a document of Wuppertal and the 80s. Images of the town and people that have no connection to dance theatre are incorporated into the work. Klaus Wildenhahn’s 1982 piece can be seen today as a tribute to Pina Bausch, a magnificent artist.
