A “woman’s enterprise” is what Uschi affectionately calls her alpine pasture. Completely on her own, the young woman from Bavaria spends a summer tending to her cows, milking, making butter and cheese. You have to be robust for this kind of work, she says. Yet she loves her quiet life far away from the valley and her parents’ farm. One summer in the mountains: that is just the beginning. Over the course of ten years Matti Bauer follows the agriculturist who lives for her freedom and faces the question of whether she can take over her parents’ farm and whether she wants to.
“What will you have a go at next?” the director asks his protagonist in the meadow. STILL gives us the answer – calmly, sensitively and in black and white. Katrin John
