SAND FISHERS
Mali 2012 – Director: Andrey Samoute Diarra – Original language: Bambara – Subtitles: English, French – Length: 72 min.
“Water gives strength, but also life and death.” The Bozo are an ethnic group in Mali. Fishing has always been their livelihood but now the people must face up to the consequences of climate change. What is there to do when the water level is so low that there is barely anything left to catch? “Sand fishing” offers them an alternative. Young men take sand from the riverbed and transport their haul in dug out canoes to sell to the flourishing construction industry. It is a gruelling and barely profitable task and yet it is their only hope. The film patiently observes their simple everyday life and struggle for existence. A Sisyphus story which offers a true insight into the protagonists’ situation. Anja Klauck
