Around the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant today there is a 20-kilometre exclusion zone that people are no longer supposed to enter. As in Tarkovsky’s STALKER, the director, Fujiwara Toshi, visits the forbidden zone. Right on the coast where the Tsunami hit we are faced with an image of destruction. The houses lie in ruins; the streets are ruptured. People are no longer cleaning up here, but countless bodies presumably still lie buried. On the edge of the exclusion zone nature is now flourishing; it is spring. The inhabitants are preparing to abandon this idyllic place forever. Toshi’s film makes their sense of loss perceptible. Images and interviews attest to a life in a region that no one is allowed to return to. Dunja Bialas
