L'OR DES AUTRES
Canada 2011 – Director: Simon Plouffe – Original language: French – Subtitles: English – Length: 60 min.
“Prosperity for Malartic!” The sleepy little market town in the Canadian province of Quebec had already seen better days. So when the international mining company, Osisko, bought out the gold mine in the town’s suburbs in 2004, things seemed to finally be looking up again. Canada’s biggest open cast mine promised new jobs and a new life. But prosperity has its price. More than 200 families had to leave their land. A whole wood fell victim to the chainsaw – until the inhabitants resisted.
Using the Canadian gold mine as an example, the film tells a David and Goliath story for the age of turbo capitalism: a story that gives you courage to stand up for your own point of view. Anne Thomé
