On the trail of Bram Stoker’s legendary novel DRACULA we are whisked away into a whimsical and amusing kaleidoscope of Romania. Vlad Tepes III Draculea, the historical figure behind the legend, was the universally feared ruler of Wallachia in the 15th Century. He is an enthralling character who not only presented Transylvania with an export hit but also left behind a deep and enduring impression. The Transylvanian Saxons of the ‘Siebenbürger’ enclave – whose number is dwindling while their pride in their Saxon heritage remains strong – have renounced their historic tormentor. The Romanians, on the other hand, want him back - preferably in the role of impaler again. And maybe, if you keep your eyes and ears to the ground… well spotted! Werewolf experts, graphologists and other experts on the vampire myth will explain. Mucha’s film is a cabinet of curiosities.
