Between Earth and Sky is a poetic portrait of Yoshi Oida, Japanese stage director who has been exploring culturally transcendent theatre all over the world since 1968 when he first met with Peter Brook’s experimental theatre in Paris. Brook was impressed by Oida’s ability to express himself without words. This was the beginning of a long collaboration in which Japanese and western stiles met. Oida has been working since 1975 with his own company on elaborating a theatre beyond words, understandable to all, above cultural differences.

The film is a collage of several parallel narrative levels, which, by association attempt to convey a picture of Oida’s personality and vision. We see Oida at work with his actors, we listen to his theory about the communication between different cultures, about gestures and corporal expression. A Sufi legend transports us into his dream of a united world.
