BAJO JUÁREZ: LA CIUDAD DEVORANDO A SUS HIJAS

Over the last decade hundreds of women have disappeared from factories along the Mexico-US border. The violated bodies of many are later found dumped in the desert and in ditches. Shocking as this sounds, the real tragedy is the failure of the authorities to bring anyone to justice for these crimes, or to end them.

Alejandra Sánchez and José Antonio Cordero’s film serves not only to illuminate this crisis, but also to highlight and remind the US of their shameful lack of support. With the finger firmly pointed at corruption that may reach the highest levels of Mexican government, they capture testimonies from journalists and police officials involved in these cases, and the factory workers and families directly affected. We see, from the woman's vantage point, the grief experienced by mothers and sisters still desperate for answers, often forced to accept the devastating fact that the ultimate fate of their loved ones may never be known. Yet they fight on, with their motto: "Ni una más!"

"In Mexico and Guatemala women are being killed at alarming rates but the perpetrators are overwhelmingly never brought to justice. This scandal has led family members of the victims to refer to the problem as a "femicide," the most extreme expression of gender based violence accepted culturally and by the State when its laws don't criminalize violence against women and whereby negligence or the lack of political will results in almost total impunity for the perpetrators of such brutality."
