“This film is much more a filmed travel diary than a documentary film,” says Wim Wenders about the portrait of his friend, the Japanese fashion designer, Yoji Yamamoto. Wim Wenders goes back and forth between the metropolises of Paris and Tokyo with the style guru Yamamoto and looks over his shoulder as he creates a new collection. Yamamoto is an advocate of a particular style of Japanese minimalism and an unassuming avant-gardist in the otherwise hyped-up world of fashion. En passant, Wenders’ portrait film becomes an intelligent reflection on the connections between architecture, urban life and the clothes that we wear. With this film, Wim Wenders once again focuses his attention on one of his soul mates. The art of Wenders’ film language is revealed in the moments when what is happening is not vocalised, but left to our imagination. Daniel Sponsel
