ZIZEK!
USA / CDN 2005 – Director: Astra Taylor – Original language: English, Slovene – Subtitles: English – Length: 71 min.
In the unglamorous world of contemporary philosophy one man stands out: Slavoj Zizek; "the Elvis of cultural theory;" an "academic rock star"; the "giant of Ljubljana". Astra Taylor's docu-portrait gives us an insight into the world and the work of the incomparable and outrageous academic as he tours the world wowing audiences with his unique discourses which bridge the gap between popular culture and intellectual debate.
Zizek has published writing on such diverse subjects as Alfred Hitchcock, 9/11, opera, Pokemon, Christianity, Lenin and The Matrix. He talks non-stop and is deeply self-analytical with a tendency to evade his growing celebrity status. "Philosophy should be an anonymous job", he says. This fascinating and frantic whistle stop tour with Zizek is exhilarating viewing. Taylor admits "The movie is relentless in that it really is about philosophy and we don't give the viewer much of a break. But then, it is also really funny. I promise, people will laugh out loud."
"It was like watching Keith Richards. In Argentina there were thousands sitting uncomfortably, hanging on his every word. It was sort of overwhelming. It heartened me to see people desiring to be challenged." Astra Taylor
