The village lies next to a deserted military airfield. It's a quiet place, where the past, present and future seem to happen at the same time. "Fatherland" is about the people who live there. It is a film that feels like digging a hole; if it's possible to dig a spiral into the ground. And if you are digging a black hole. An archaeological journey to the countryside, to people and objects, tracing the changes of time. Expansive landscapes are portrayed, and the people within them.
And whenever you step inside the small bar, run by Otto Nathos, you hear talk of the war... and talk of passed youth.
