TROPICÁLIA
Brazil 2012 – Director: Marcelo Machado – Original language: Portuguese – Length: 87 min.
"We lived it up, intensely." That is how Gilberto Gil sums up the Tropicália days. Together with the musical icons Caetano Veloso, Os Mutantes, Gal Costa and Tom Zé he was at the heart of this revolutionary cultural movement at the end of the 1960s in Brazil. Tropicália, with its radical mix of Brazilian popular music and Anglo-American psychedelic rock, rose up in opposition both to the military dictatorship as well as the extreme left. It was rebellious, self-analytical and explosive.
Director Marcelo Machado lets the archive images speak for themselves. A powerful kaleidoscope is generated that captivates with its rapidly edited sequences, collages, coloured film material and voiceover. A Brazilian revolution in sound and images. Maren Willkomm
