THREE SISTERS
France, Hong Kong 2012 – Director: Wang Bing – Original language: Chinese – Subtitles: English – Length: 153 min.
China is the world’s second biggest national economy after USA. In Yunnan province in the south east of China you get no sense of that at all. Three sisters are growing up on a sparse plateau almost on their own. Their mother has left the family; their father has gone to the distant city to earn money. The girls’ everyday life consists of a bit of schooling, harvesting potatoes and preparing the pigs’ fodder. Every now and again they get to play and recapture a bit of their childhood.
Wang Bing, China’s most significant documentary filmmaker, gingerly touches on the social traumas of his emergent homeland. A captivatingly beautiful portrait of a life in hopeless poverty. Dunja Bialas
