THE MOSUO SISTERS
United States 2012 – Director: Marlo Poras – Original language: Mandarin, Tibetan – Subtitles: English – Length: 80 min.
“I’m so pissed off you’re ending up like this. You could have studied, but you gave up.” Juma paid for her sister, Latso, to attend school so that, one day, she could enable their family to have a better life. They are descended from the matriarchal Mosuo tribe that lives at the foot of the Himalayas. Juma, the eldest, works in the town while Latso had returned to the countryside – temporarily until the financial crisis had passed. Then Latso fell in love with someone from the village and decided to enter into a traditional “walking marriage” with him, withdrawing from modern life forever.
MOSUO SISTERS is a striking drama that records life with the power of Tolstoy and the poetics of Wong Kar-Wai. Dunja Bialas
