SUITE HABANA
Kuba / Spanien 2003 – Director: Fernando Pérez – Original language: Spanish – Subtitles: English – Length: 80 min.
Dawn breaks in La Habana, and as the day advances we follow the simple lives of ten ordinary Cubans. We meet a young hospital attendant who dreams of a career as a drag queen. We see a widowed father taking his disabled son to school every morning. A doctor performing as a clown, a retired professor of Marxism whose wife sells peanuts on Prado to bring a little money into the home. They are some of the people who offer us a glimpse of their daily lives.
Suite Habana is a visual composition without dialogue or commentary. Instead, noises, sounds and music are woven together lending a poetic flavour to the vivid images. The result is a beautiful declaration of love to Havana, the city of dreams and contradictions.
In Cuba Suite Habana is considered one of the most important films to have ever been produced there. El País calls it “undoubtedly the best Cuban movie since ‘Fresa y Chocolate’”.
Best Latin-American Film at the 25th International Film Festival Havana as well as awards for Best Director, Music and Sound-Design.
