Story Musgrave is a poet and a mathematician. He is also the most experienced astronaut in America. He is 61 years old and has been to space and back six times.

In this film, Story talks. He reveals the price that man pays to achieve the most radical form of uprooting possible. He tells of the experience of returning to earth. He describes how much more powerful life on earth is than being in outer-space.

Memories bring out Story’s own life. As a child he sought refuge in the woods; as a young physician and father of six he taught himself to fly. Accidents and suicides took half of Story's family away from him. He wanted to touch death in the sky. But it wasn’t until he reached it, that he came to understand himself.

"I’m lonely. It’s hard to say how lonely I am. I don’t know. I cannot answer the question 'am I happy'. I have no idea. I have no idea if I’m happy. I love myself. I’m not sure that I am hard on myself. I love who I am and what I do." (Story Musgrave)
