SHIRLEY - VISIONS OF REALITY
Austria 2013 – Director: Gustav Deutsch – Original language: English – Length: 93 min.
Film and painting coincide on the big screen: in thirteen scenes the director Gustav Deutsch brings to life the American artist Edward Hopper’s most well-known paintings (e.g. Office at Night and Western Motel). With uncanny accuracy the film shows Shirley, a redheaded actress, passing through interiors and decades of American history from the depression and the cold war to the civil rights movement. The accurate reproductions and painterly lighting allow reality and dream and personal and political stories to merge into a fascinating series of images. We get to know another side to the realist Hopper: that of an enthusiastic cinemagoer. Anne Thomé
