Arabic Israelis is what the Palestinians living in Israel are officially called. Today they make up 20-25 percent of Israel's population. Filmmaker Ula Tabari is Palestinian herself. Just before the Israeli day of independence, a day that Palestinians mourn as the day of Nakba, or catastrophe, she goes to her home country. She speaks to her parents, friends and people on the street; visits kindergartens and schools and asks, what this day means to Palestinians.

Her very personal investigation searches for the reasons and the background of the Palestinian problems. The film does not seek simple explanations, but continually asks new questions: How do Palestinians see their identity in Israel? How does the image of the unfriendly neighbour originate? How does Palestinian education and Israeli institutions influence the children's identity? Private Investigation gives an insight to one of the burning problems of the Middle East: the identity problem of a group of people, which is barely listened to in Israel.
