PINK SARIS

"If you are timid you will die." Sampat Pal is a female vigilante in the North Indian province of Uttar Pradesh. She is the leader of the “Gulabi Gang,” a group of women from the lower caste who wear a uniform of bright pink saris. Self-confident and militant she campaigns against forced marriage, abuse and the degradation of the untouchable caste, for example in the case of the young Rekha. Rehka and Abhay, who is from a higher caste, are in love. When she falls pregnant Abhay’s father forbids their marriage. For Rekha this would mean death but Sampat Pal sticks to her guns._In Pink Saris Kim Longinotto has captured a moving drama, almost like an Indian Romeo and Juliet.
