OVER YOUR CITIES GRASS WILL GROW
UK/NL/FRA 2010 – Director: Sophie Fiennes – Original language: English, French, German – Subtitles: English – Length: 105 min.
“Ruins are the future because everything that is, fades away. There is a wonderful chapter in Isaiah, which says: over your cities grass will grow.” (Anselm Kiefer)_On the site of a derelict silk factory, between 1993 and 2008, Anselm Kiefer created a ‘gesamtkunstwerk’ in the empty spaces, tunnels and towers – a labyrinthine architecture full of layers and tracks. Sophie Fiennes spent two years exploring the site seeped in history with her camera before Kiefer abandoned "La Ribaute" to nature and left it to decay. The images she captured are supported by music from György Ligeti._A sophisticated meditation on the German artist and alchemist and an artistic reflection on a work of history, which is – in a literal sense – hard as lead, rocky and brittle.
