MATTHEW'S LAWS
Netherlands 2012 – Director: Marc Schmidt – Original language: Dutch – Subtitles: German – Length: 73 min.
“I have no intuition whatsoever; I have to work everything out!” Matthijs is autistic. He records his phone calls so that he can detect the emotions hidden in their frequencies. The director, his school friend, enables us to get to know a true tragic hero. Despite Matthijs’ illness, which plunges him into an apparent chaos, this “Homo Faber” is strangely close to us. He possesses a cognitive quality that is in spite of his simple capabilities. He is a modern Oedipus whose considerable efforts to cope with his lot lead to catastrophe. The film is absorbing, touching, and tragic in the truest sense of the word because his failings involve a great deal of human suffering. Marcus Morlinghaus
