MANUFACTURED LANDSCAPES
Kanada 2006 – Director: Jennifer Baichwal – Original language: English – Length: 90 min.
Renowned Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky's remarkable depictions of industrial landscapes explore the link between man and nature, finding the beauty and humanity in mining, quarrying, and shipping. Jennifer Baichwal follows Burtynsky to China as he documents the impact of the massive industrial revolution. Both the director's and artist's lens take in mile-long factory floors, the world’s biggest dam, and the breathtaking scale of Shanghai's urban renewal.
Manufactures Landscapes allows us to see behind the narrative of Burtynsky's photographs, witnessing nature transformed through industry both as progress and as destruction, metaphors for the dilemma of modern existence. It brings our profound impact on the planet to the forefront, but offers us no easy answers. In the process, it tries to change our approach to the world and the way we live in it.
"His photos are aesthetically incredibly seductive. They're fabulous in their ambiguity. You're initially overwhelmed by their sheer scale. Then you look more closely and see what they are. They make you a witness to what you're responsible for." Jennifer Baichwal
