LANG IST DER WEG
Deutschland 1947 – Director: Herbert B. Fredersdorf – Original language: German – Subtitles: None – Length: 78 min.
"I am forever on the run… All my memories are affected by countless escapes and by instincts I do not know the origin of…" Born in 1917 in Poland, Israel Beker is the sole survivor of a large family that was devastated by the Shoah. After 1945 Beker ended up in Landsberg in a Displaced Persons camp for Jewish survivors. There he made the semi-autobiographical film LONG IS THE ROAD (1948), the first filmic treatise on the Shoah from the perspective of Jewish survivors post 1945. Over 50 years later the film THE BALCONY (HA'MIRPESET, 2000) traces Israel Beker’s life once more. It is the portrait of an artist from a virtually extinct world and shows how the past and the present come together in Beker’s life and thus the balcony that he goes out on day after day becomes like a stage that joins them both together.
