Filmmaker Julien Temple records the transformation of "mouthy" John Mellor into the anti establishment icon known as Joe Strummer, frontman of seminal punk band The Clash. We discover a complex man who used music to assuage his conscience, and to educate others about injustice. Chronicling Strummer from The Clash's inception, this film uses archive footage, rare interviews, vintage photos, and Temple's own footage, which he started filming in 1976. His close friendship with Strummer allowed him almost unlimited access to notebooks, writings, recordings, and his doodles which are brought to life in animations between scenes.

We see fascinating live footage spanning Strummer's career and interviews with some of the former members of The Clash, as well as fans and friends such as Bono, John Cusack, Jim Jarmusch, Matt Dillon and Johnny Depp. Temple bases many of his interviews around a campfire, in recognition of the celebrations Strummer used to organise late in his life, which he considered "more important than any music I've written".
