Silence speaks louder than words. This is especially true for Anne, Utz, Tine and Mathias. As young people and citizens of the former German Democratic Republic, all four of them were persecuted and eventually incarcerated. Their crimes varied from reading the wrong books, to "denigrating" the socialist regime or simply having an opinion and saying it out loud. Sixteen years after the iron curtain has been lifted, the memories of prison and fear still cause them pain. They share their anger about their injustice suffered to just about anyone who wants to listen. Some of them do so by writing, some of them by talking in public. The only ones they can't seem to express themselves to are their own families. "What we went through separates us from everyone who hasn't experienced something similar", says Utz. Last to know is a movie about fear, love, silence and an important part of German history.
