17th October 1961 was the day that the “Massacre of Paris” took place. Tens of thousands of Algerians living in Paris were peacefully demonstrating against the curfews that had been imposed on them because of the events of the Algerian War when the police advanced on them with maximum brutality. 200 people died; they were shot and beaten and their bodies were dumped in the Seine. The bloody suppression of the demonstration remains a taboo subject in France to this day.
But what really happened on the day? Director, Yasmina Adi, interviews witnesses and the bereaved and combines their testimonies with unique audio and visual material from the archives of the broadcasters. An absorbing reconstruction of a day, which people still do not speak about. Dunja Bialas
