“The headscarf is a disgrace for Islam. The banning of headscarves is a disgrace for German politics.” Emel Zeynelabidin does not mince her words and does not stray from following her own path despite her family’s resistance. Emel is a campaigner for Muslim women’s rights; she has set up an Islamic women’s sports club, an Islamic school and kindergarten. For Emel’s mother the transformation of her daughter into an emancipated critic of religion is hard to understand. Even Emel’s eldest daughter takes some time to accept her mother’s strong-mindedness. HÜLLEN is a family portrait about three women from three generations. The film walks a fine line between religious beliefs and individual responsibility.
